In a dying world no longer protected by an ozone layer, technology only exists to shelter small amounts of land.
A new Cold War has arisen between the United States and new superpower, Japan's Great Union. Both race to develop protective technology for their citizens. Advancements are kept secret with each country hoping the other will fail and perish from the Earth.
With an inevitable war on the horizon, a secret U. S. defense strategy is constructed calling for the launch of demolition forces against unsheltered American cities in ambush of invading troops.
Primary objectives are elimination of the invasion force while clearing land for the construction of new lifesaving technology. Secondary hopes include the rejuvenation of a radiation-poisoned U.S. population through the genocide of those living on the outside, collateral damage of these ambush
attacks.
Unbeknownst to the U.S. President, an underground government faction has been secretly stoking global political fires in provocation of a J.G.U. invasion. On the verge of attack, the President is maneuvered into putting the secret defense strategy into use.
Visiting his stepchildren living outside the technologically protected societies, an embittered retired military commander finds himself caught within this newly declared war. Promised rescue for himself and his family, he is coerced into helping implement the plan. He must set out to destroy his family's hometown with only the purpose of getting his stepchildren out.

Well written, but there were more escapes than storyline. They never used the main weapon which was disappointing. They had the additional Hideaway weapon to solve the earth’s ozone problem but never used that either. If I knew this was another serial I never would have read it. Who can take another 300 pages of running to escape.Product details

Horrendous. Could not get past the first few chapters. Poor writing for such a good concept. Should have paid attention to other reviews.

Keep me intrigued all through the book.
This is analogous to those straight-to-video movies that end up in the $3 bin at Big Lots. Somehow, they are produced, written and made; but in so many cases, you end up wondering...what were they thinking?
In this case, the author seems to have stitched together a ponderous book with a plot line that simply makes no sense. Earth's ozone layer has failed, evidently causing a caste system in which some unspecified "elite" end up in domes, and the rest of humanity ends up...not in domes, evidently too stupid to stay indoors. To try to make this all plausible, the author creates a new kind of radiation One that apparently deteriorates concrete, steel and brick so that it crumbles. Not the domes, of course somehow, THOSE materials are impermeable.
Scratching your head yet? How about these little gems
--The futuristic military is ultra-smart, ultra-mechanized, and ultra-equipped...except when they have to go somewhere in the dark. Then, they fumble and stumble around because in this universe, night vision goggles were never invented.
--The outside-the-dome citizens are emaciated, radiation-ravaged and prone to bleeding and dying at a moment's notice...except when the citizens are related to the main character. Then, they perform superhuman feats over several days with various injuries and little food with no apparent problems.
--In a world where all the land is described as arid, lifeless and barren, half the characters drown their sorrows with a good cigarette. Which is made of tobacco. Which is grown...where exactly?
--The author has decided that virtually every noun deserves an adjective and every verb deserves an adverb. Glass never breaks - it breaks softly. Honestly. No one ever stares - they universally stare coldly or hotly, and both words are apparently interchangeable to the author. I daresay there are 3,000 completely superfluous words in this novel attributable to useless adjectives and adverbs.
Indeed, there are whole passages that are redundant and serve to do nothing to advance the story. In this universe, military men conduct 20-minute long conversations to debate the pros and cons of helping a stranded soldier in the middle of an epic battle, and the dialogue is incessant in its repetition.
Even with an editor and a halving of the story (and believe me, it would be easy to cut this novel in half), there is simply no character development that makes you want to root for the hero or his family. Oh...and the sequel? It contains virtually no ties or links to the initial story.
All in all, this is one hot mess of a book. With so many other quality independent titles and authors out there, I can't recommend this even at its current zero price. Your time is still worth something; spend that time in something more fulfilling.
This is a great concept but, it feels like the author was stretching it out too much. This particular book was too "wordy". This would have been AMAZING as a novella or even as a Serial.
Could have been shorter.
The only reason I kept reading was because I needed to know how it ended.
I don't know the nationality of the author but, by the end, I hated myself for being born in the country that I was. Unfortunately, it all rings too true.
SPOILLER - I kind of wish I hadn't finished it. I would have been happy-ish if the author had killed off the step-father (as heroic as he was) and saved his children.
Loved this book but hated the ending... Yet... There is a book two of which I will be reading.. It's a tale unlike others in this genre which is amazing since most have a commonality to their story. Not this one.
The general plot and characterization of this novel are intriguing and nicely paced. That said, I cannot recommend anyone purchase this novel. Presented as serious military scifi, the text read like the transcript of an anime offering from Aniplex. The descriptions of emotional reactions and behaviors begins sound and realistic dealing with the struggles of a blended family separated by politics, quarantine and ideology. But the story becomes increasingly melodramatic as the author moves from what he knows to a parody of combat stress.
The physics of the thing rapidly go from scifi to the comically exaggerated superweapons and inertialess physics of typical anime. The third major failing of the novel is language. The first three to four chapters are polished, from there the command of basic English becomes progressively worse until major portions read like the machine translated drivel common to the current crop of Canadian dubs from the big Japanimation mills.
To summarize, If you like good scifi, looks elsewhere. If you are looking for anime/manga, sorry no pictures.
